Whats New:

Whats New

The new Versa Remote Firmware is now available! Among other general fixes, we added some key features, including:

  1. Multiple Layout support, so you can set up various layouts for various apps and tricks.

  2. Layout switching, either via boot button, button press (that you can assign), or using our new Tilt to Switch feature, which will switch layouts by simply tilting the remote.

  3. We added support for the Book Test Library, which now allows you to add additional books from the library and perform book tests with multiple books.

  4. Additional Book Test word modes, including a "number of letters in word" mode.

  5. A Export and Import function for your settings. Now, if you lose your remote or it breaks, you can simply obtain a new one and load your settings file, without needing to reprogram everything again.

  6. Fake Name and Keep Device Awake, allowing you to perform many of the same effects you love (like the book test) using ANY borrowed device (iOS or Android).

  7. Power level adjustment, so you can turn the power of the antenna up or down depending on your usage situation (to obtain more range or more battery life).

This firmware update is FREE for all Versa 2b (15 button) users. Make sure you are using a remote with a flesh-tone back, not a black back, to ensure all the features listed above (and explained below) are compatible. Get it by clicking here!

Quick Start

NOTE: As much as we all love video tutorials, the reality of it is this device is always in develpment, getting new features and improvements and it is just easier to type the instructions rather than re-setup all the cameras and re-shoot the tutorials. So, if you notice something looking slightly different or behaving slightly different than it is in the video tutorial, read through the written instructions as they will always be the most up to date reference for you to use.

Quick Start:

Getting Started in Six Steps...please follow these steps before using your Versa Remote:

1) Remove the FCC Sticker:
When you first receive your Versa Remote, if it has a sticker on the bottom indicating FCC Compliance, you may remove and discard the sticker, as it will not be needed for use.

2) Charge the Remote: You can charge it using any standard micro USB cord by plugging it into your computer or a 5w power charger/standard phone charger. Some cords have a bit more “grip” than others so, when you remove the cord, be sure to pull it straight back and not wiggle it from side to side. If you wiggle it side to side, it could damage the connector.

While the remote is powering, the red LED light will turn on and, once charging is complete, the a green light will illuminate (both lights will be on). Please make sure the remote is powered OFF while charging (with the on/off switch set toward the usb port).

IMG_4981.HEIC
IMG_4984.HEIC

3) Turn the Remote On: The power switch is located directly next to the usb charging port. The back cover slightly covers up the power switch (to prevent turning it on or off accidentally in your pocket), so feel free to pull on it slightly to access the switch. Turn the switch on by sliding it away from the USB Port, using your finger or, if difficult, any non-conductive item (a toothpick or pen cap will do here, just something that is not metal). Do this carefully as not to damage any of the internal components of the remote.

When turned on successfully, you will see a light, feel a vibration, then see a second light. The first light indicates the power level of the remote (green for full, red for dead, and shades of yellow/orange/etc for all other power levels), then the led will indicate the mode. For standard Bluetooth mode, it will show as a solid BLUE light. A single vibration indicates the remote powered on successfully.

IMG_4977.jpg

4) Connect to Your Phone: To connect the remote to your phone, open the Bluetooth menu of your phone and scan for new devices (most phones scan automatically when this menu is opened. If yours does not, toggle the Bluetooth connection on and off). In the Bluetooth menu, look for the a device with the name "Versa", followed by several additional characters. Tap the name to connect to it like any other Bluetooth device. Once paired, the remote will vibrate and the blue light will turn off.

IMG_07EF2BCAC96A-1.jpeg

5) Test the Remote: To test, open a blank email, blank note, or any other part of your phone that takes a text input. then, press the topmost (or for 15 button models, top-leftmost) button of the remote (the button furthest away and to the left from the power switch)...if you see the letter "a" typed into the display, and feel a slight vibration, congratulations, the remote is connected and functioning properly! You can press the other buttons on the remote, and each one should type a different keystroke (a through j).

6) Check (and update) the Firmware: Once done, it is very important to make sure the firmware of the remote (the software that runs on the remote) is up to date. To do this, you need to boot the remote into wifi mode to both check the firmware version and update it if it is out of date. Click here to get the latest firmware files, and follow the video instructions to update, or read about booting to wifi config mode and updating the remote in this section.

other remote details

Other Remote Details

When you power on the Versa remote for the first time, the led light up (remote will short vibrate), turn off, then light up again and (possibly) turn off again (and long vibrate).

The first light on the LED represents the battery status. The more full the battery is, the more green this light will be. The less full, the more red it will be. Use this to quickly determine how much battery life you have remaining.

The second LED will indicate the mode. We will talk about the various LED lights in later sections, but a solid LED light means you are currently in standard Bluetooth mode.

If you feel a long vibration, and the remote turns off, this means the remote has connected to your device successfully. There will be no more LED lights until you reboot the remote.

You will also notice the remote will make a small vibration every time a button is pressed, to confirm

a) the remote is on and working and

b) that the button was pressed.

Each button has two actions: a short press and a long press. So, each button can be configured with two different letters, words, functions, etc. When you press and hold the button, you will feel a long vibration to indicate a long press and a short vibration to indicate a short press.

The remote itself also has a low battery notification. If you are using the remote and the vibration motor is buzzing one long, constant vib, this means the battery is at 5% (and you should charge it as soon as possible). If the remote has no LED when turning on, this means the battery is dead and you should charge it. The battery is not user replaceable.

remote concealment

Remote Concealment

The Versa remote is designed to be concealed in the palm of your hand, more specifically where your middle finger goes. You can hold it in place one of two ways depending on the size of your hand.

Grip 1: End Grip

The first grip is the end grip. Place the remote along your middle finger, and curl your middle finger toward your palm so the ends of the remote are pinched at the 1st and 3rd joint of your finger. This is similar to the hand position used for finger palming a coin.

IMG_4965.HEIC
IMG_4967.HEIC

Grip 2: Side Grip

The second grip is the side grip. Place the remote along your middle finger, and allow your middle finger to move backwards slightly, so the sides of the remotes make contact with the side of your index and ring finger. Then, pinch the ring finger and index finger together slightly, holding the remote in place. This is a good grip to use if the length of the remote is longer than your middle finger, or if the remote does not feel securely held into place.

IMG_4969.HEIC
IMG_4970.HEIC

If either of these grips are difficult or uncomfortable, you can adhere 1 or 2 small loops of black elastic to the bottom of the remote (with hot glue, preferably), and slide your finger through the elastic. This way, the remote stays in place no matter how you hold your hand. Also, a bit of double stick tape or gel grip tape can be used if you want to secure the remote to your finger, yet still be able to remove it easily.

Grip 3: Curled Fingers Grip

Another grip you can use, if either of the grips are comfortable, is to lay the remote across your curled fingers, like you would hold a traditional television remote, and press the buttons from there. This way, the remote is more secure and sturdy in your hand, but is more prone to being visible due to the alignment of it (and the curved fingers). Either way, use the grip most comfortable for you.

Watch SETUP

Watch Setup

The Versa Remote has the ability to connect directly to a variety of magic smart watches. Our choice, and the watch that we support officially, is the SB Watch/TimeSmith Watch, available here. We also support other watches, but their support is in beta, so be sure to check the Versa page here to see which watches we have tested and know work with the Versa Remote. Our support is specifically to watches we own and can test with a remote, so if there is a watch you would like to use with our remote, email support@thoughtcastmagic.com so we can arrange for you to send your watch to us so we can test/add support, and we can return it to you (or, if enough people ask, we will purchase some and test on our own).

connecting your watch

The way smart watches are designed, they can only be connected to one device at a time. So, the first step is to close any apps that might be using your watch. You don't need to unpair the watch from your apps. Turning off the Bluetooth on any devices that might be connected to your watch is also a good way to ensure the watch doesn't connect to those apps first.

Once unpaired, the way you connect the Versa remote to your watch is to set the watch into "Watch Pairing" mode. Power your remote off, and press and hold either:

Button B or Button D, and power the remote on. Button B puts your remote into "number entry" mode, and Button D puts your remote into "swipe entry" mode.

When you turn on the remote, you know you are in the watch mode because you will feel one long vibration, and the light will either be green.

For either mode, make sure the remote is oriented with the entry buttons toward the top of your hand. So, in swipe mode, the E button is up and the A button is down.

When the remote goes into pairing mode for the first time, the LED will turn green and slowly pulse. This means the remote is looking for a watch to pair to. So, take your smart watch and put it into pairing mode according to the instructions. Once the Versa remote finds your watch, the LED will turn yellow, indicating the handshake process is happening. Once connected, you will feel one long vibration and the LED light will turn off. Now, this remote will remember the watch that is connected and, when it is powered on, it will enter watch mode automatically and try to connect to this particular watch (if it is available).

If you own multiple watches and need to connect to the "right one", there are two ways to do so:

  1. Take the watch you want to pair, with your Versa remote, at least 100ft/30m away, so it will not connect to any of your other watches, or

  2. Start the remote in Numeric mode (long press B button) and let the watch pair to a watch. Once paired, When the watch connects, try to set a time to check which watch is paired. If this is the right watch, you can stop and the remote will only pair to this watch until reset in config mode. If it is not the right watch, press "99" on the keypad of the remote, and it will temporarily blacklist the watch and pair to another watch in the vicinity. Repeat this process until the watch you want to use is paired.

  3. Purchase a "Faraday" bag, used for blocking radio frequencies of all types. Place the watches you don't want paired into this bag, and leave the one you want to pair outside the bag, and it will (more than likely) connect to the one not in the bag.

Once the watch you are looking to pair is paired, Versa will remember the watch and pair only to it when you boot to Watch mode, until this is reset (either from pressing and holding a button on boot or from the wifi config screen, both discussed more below under "Other Watch Mode Information").

If you get a new watch, or want to connect the remote to a new watch, you must "forget" the old watch by booting into wifi config mode per the instructions above and clicking the "Unpair" button next to the watch name at the top of the screen. The name of the paired watch will change to **UNPAIRED** at the top of the screen, and you can then reboot the remote into watch mode and pair to a new watch.

setting the time

In Numeric Mode, use the number pad with the digits 1-9, then the 0 button is the middle most button. So, to test, press the topmost/leftmost button 4 times, and the watch will set itself to 11:11. After the 4th press, it will vibrate to confirm the time was sent and continue vibrating until the time is set, then stop once the time is set. If you enter a number higher than 1259, or an invalid number/unsettable time, it will send 4 short vibrations to alert you the time was invalid. If you must use a 24 hour time input, you can enable "24 hour" watch input from the Watch tab of the wifi config menu. If this is on, the remote will always expect a 4 digit input.

In Swipe Mode, this sets the time of the watch using the clock swipe method that requires 6 swipes to set. This technique was invented by Paul Longhurst and used with permission (thanks Paul). Instead of actually swiping, you're pressing the button that would normally co-relate to a swipe in that direction. Here are some instructions from our friend Benke Smith at the TimeSmith app on how this feature works:

The idea of the clock swipe method is that you can input any number with exactly 2 button presses. For this you'll have to imagine a clock face with numbers 1 to 12 (where number 12 can also represent number 0). You will have to press the button on the directional pad (with the charging port /directional pad at the top) to any of these 4 directions: UP, DOWN, LEFT or RIGHT.

The first button press:

if the first button press is UP, you go to number 0/12
if the first button press is RIGHT, you go to number 3
if the first button press is DOWN, you go to number 6
if the first button press is LEFT, you go to number 9

The second button press:

if the first button press was UP, and your second button press is UP again, then you stay on number 0/12
if the first button press was UP, and your second button press is RIGHT, then you go to number 1
if the first button press was UP, and your second button press is LEFT, then you go to number 11

if the first button press was RIGHT, and your second button press is RIGHT again, then you stay on number 3
if the first button press was RIGHT, and your second button press is UP, then you go to number 2
if the first button press was RIGHT, and your second button press is DOWN, then you go to number 4

if the first button press was DOWN, and your second button press is DOWN again, then you stay on number 6
if the first button press was DOWN, and your second button press is RIGHT, then you go to number 5
if the first button press was DOWN, and your second button press is LEFT, then you go to number 7

if the first button press was LEFT, and your second button press is LEFT again, then you stay on number 9
if the first button press was LEFT, and your second button press is UP, then you go to number 10
if the first button press was LEFT, and your second button press is DOWN, then you go to number 8

Here are some images to make things clearer, also courtesy of the TimeSmith app/Benke Smith:

clock_swipe_arrows.jpg

Reset/Start Over:

If you mess up or think you messed up the number input and want to start over, in number entry mode, press and hold any button except #0 (the middlemost button on the 15 button model). In swipe mode, press and hold any button except #3 (the middle of the d-pad).

Return to Current Time:

When the remote connects to your watch, it saves the time the watch is currently set to and tracks it with a clock. So, if you ever want to return to the current time, make sure the watch is set to the current time when you connect. Then, press and hold the #3 button (middle of the d-pad) on 10 button Versa remote models and the 0 button (middlemost button) on 15 button Versa remote models to set the watch to the current time (this is not 100% exact due to how the remote works, so it might be off by a minute or two in either direction).

setting force times

On 15 button models, you have the ability to set 4 force times that, when you press one of the directional pad buttons, you can automatically go directly to that specific time. The time's correlate to the button you need to press (short press), so Preset A would load when the A button is pressed, etc. You can change these values in the Wifi Config, and that config page is discussed in detail here.

other watch mode information

The reasonable range for watches is about 5ft/1.5m from the remote. If you leave this range, your remote will start to vibrate single pulses repeatedly to let you know. When you come back, the pulse vibrations will stop, alerting you the watch has reconnected.

Also keep in mind, a lot of watch problems can be solved by simply replacing the battery in the watch. The battery values shown in the magic apps/watch apps you use more than often under-report the actual values, as measuring coin cell battery power is very difficult. There are lots of battery replacement tutorials online, and even some specific to the SB watches if you have one. The procedure is much simpler than you expect and usually either needs just the equipment you have (an xacto knife or a pair of electronics tweezers) and/or a watch back closer, which typically sells for $30-40 on Amazon. If you are performing with your watch a lot, we suggest replacing the watch batteries once every month or so, once the batteries themselves are common and relatively inexpensive.

Wifi Config - Connect

wifi configuration - How to Connect

This is talked about briefly in the QuickStart but, if you would like to change the button configuration, view the battery power percentage, see what watch is paired to your remote, or if there is a firmware update to install, you can do it all from the wifi configuration menu.

To access the configuration menu on the 10 button model, press and hold the very last button on the remote while powering it on (the button closest to the power switch and usb port). On the 15 button model, press and hold the middlemost button (the button between #8 on the numpad and A on the dpad).

WebConfigButtons.png

If done correctly, the led will flash blue. Once it flashes blue, open your computer or phone to the wifi settings (where you choose the wifi network to connect to) and tap on "Versa Config". Go to your web browser and type in the address "10.1.1.1".

On iOS, if you are in the wifi menu when the remote powers on and you don't see the VersaConfig network in the list, back out to the full Settings list, then tap on Wifi again. Also, on iOS, if the web page is not loading after you connect in Wifi Settings, just wait until the blue check is visible next to the "Versa Config" network name as shown in the photo below.

On Android, wait for the Wifi network to connect completely before trying to open the Wifi config webpage. You may have to turn off the cellular radio on your phone, but most likely it should work as soon as it is connected.

IMG_2493C7300909-1.jpeg
Firmware Update

If done successfully, you will see the wifi configuration menu, including fields to set both the short and long press keystrokes of each button of the remote, and where you can update the firmware. If a firmware update is available, we will email you, and you can download it and find installation instructions below.

If you get a "The Wifi Network 'Versa Config' does not appear to be connected to the internet" error, just tap "Keep Trying Wifi"

IMG_8CF011AB3279-1.jpeg

If you get a "Cellular Data is Turned Off" error, just ignore it and tap OK.

IMG_0387.jpg

If you're having problems getting the remote to show up in the wifi list, or trouble connecting, check out the troubleshooting at the bottom of the page.

Once you are in the Wifi Config page, if you don't know what any setting does, just hover your mouse cursor over the name or tap on the name to get a short description of what that setting does!

WiFi Conig - Vibe Strength

WIFI CONFIG - Vibration Strength adjustment

While in WIFI Configuration mode, the d-pad buttons control the strength of the vibration motor. To set the vibration power, enter the WiFi/configuration mode on the remote and press the following buttons:

A - Max Vibration Power

B - Reduce Vibration Power 15%

D - Increase Vibration Power 15%

E - Min Vibration Power

You don't need to connect to the remote via wifi to adjust the vibration power, just put it in wifi mode and use the buttons to change the values.

Once you are done, just turn the remote off / on to continue using the remote in the same mode you had active before entering config mode.

Wifi Config - Keyboard

Wifi config - KEYBOARD SETTINGS

Here is a rundown of the various features you can set up in the Wifi Config Mode, and what you can do with each of them. If you don't know what a setting does, you need only tap the name of it or hover your mouse cursor over it for a brief explanation of what it does.

Button actions

When you click on each button's drop down menu (for short and long press), you can control what each button does in Bluetooth Mode. Each button itself has the ability to perform a variety of different actions. Here is a brief explanation for each of them:

None - This sets the key to do nothing when pressed/disables the key.

Set Key - This allows you to set a specific key (or keys/words) to be typed into the connected device when this button is pressed. You can also set the remote to type spaces or returns as well.

Function Key - This will trigger one of the F-keys found on normal keyboards. Depending on your device, this might have different effects.

Delete Key - This will delete the last character entered by the remote.

Delete Last Typed - This will delete the last word or phrase entered by the remote if your last keypress had multiple characters.

Delete All Typed - This will delete all characters previously entered by the remote so far.

Play/Pause - This will trigger play and pause in your music or audio app.

Prev & Next - This will go to the previous or next track in your music or audio app.

Vol - This will increase or decrease the volume output of the connected device.

Mute/Unmute - This will mute or unmute all sound from the connected device.

Brightness - This will increase or decrease the screen brightness of your connected device.

Sleep - This will put the remote to sleep, to conserve battery power. You must press the 0 key to wake it up, and when woken it will vibrate to confirm it is awake and connected.

Show Batt Level - This will briefly turn on the LED to show your current battery level of the remote.

Home - This will trigger your device to go to the home screen. This is primarily intended for mobile devices, is not compatible with every mobile device and varies from device to device.

Search - This will trigger your device to go to the search screen. This is primarily intended for mobile devices, is not compatible with every mobile device and varies from device to device.

Calculator - This will trigger your device to go to the Calculator app. This is primarily intended for mobile devices, is not compatible with every mobile device and varies from device to device.

Toggle Tilt to Switch - This will enable or disable the "Tilt to Switch" functionality explained below.

Switch Layout - This will load a different layout of buttons as specified/picked when this is set. You will need to have multiple layouts set up, as described below.

multiple button layouts &
Boot buttons

You can set up Versa with as many keyboard layouts as you would like, and switch with them either with a button press (as described above), or by tilting the remote. To setup a new layout, just click the + button under the "Layouts" column on the far right side of the screen.

Layouts-PlusButton.png

Then, a pop up alert will ask you to name this layout. Once done, press OK, and you will see the button options for this layout, with the layout name listed in the drop down menu where it originally said "Default".

Now, you can program an entirely different setup of keys on this layout. Be sure to include one of them that goes back to the original layout or you will be stuck on this layout and will have to reboot to get back to your first layout. You can also remove the currently showing layout by pressing the minus button (-), or rename the currently showing layout with the Rename button. You can also rename the Default layout if you so choose to.

You can also choose three layouts to boot to when you turn your remote on. Just click on the drop down menu for the button you would like to set ("Boot Key B1", etc) and choose the layout you'd like for that key. Then, when booting the remote, you can simply hold that key down and power the remote, and that layout will load. Make sure to save your changes frequently as you set up your layouts! You can also tilt the remote to change layouts, that is discussed below.

Tilt to Switch Layouts

tilt to switch Layouts

Along with using a button preset to switch layouts, you can also use the tilt sensor in the remote to switch layouts as well. Here's a brief rundown on how to set up Tilt to Switch:

  1. Have Multiple Layouts Set Up: if you only have one layout, you won't be able to switch to anything. So, be sure to click the "+" button and create a new layout.

  2. Set the "Switch with Tilt" layout: At the bottom of the Keyboard screen (under all the drop down menus for each individual buttons settings) is the "Switch with Tilt" drop down. From here, you can choose which layout will be loaded when the remote is tilted when THIS layout is active. The Switch with Tilt option is different for each option, and you can think of it as "When this layout is active and I tilt the remote, what layout should load?". Be sure to set this value for each layout you have set up in your remote.

  3. Set the "Primary Direction": The remote tilt, to prevent it from switching layouts accidentally, is designed for the remote to be held in either "End Grip" or "Side Grip" while held with your hand and arm at your side. This keeps the remote positioned vertically, with either the port and power switch end pointed up to the sky, or the the end opposite. In this toggle, you're telling the remote which end will be pointed down so, when the remote is tilted 180º the other direction, it knows to switch to the layout specified in the "Switch with Tilt" option you set above. So, if you plan to use the current layout with the number pad, set it to "Number Pad Down" and, if you plan to use the layout with the directional pad, set it to "D-Pad/Charge Port Down".

  4. Turn on the Tilt to Switch toggle: Under the Boot Keys in the far right side of the screen is a "Tilt to Switch" toggle button. Be sure this is on, or Tilt to Switch will not work.

  5. Optional - add a "Toggle Tilt to Switch" button to your layout: If you plan to move your hands a lot and don't want the layout switching accidentally, you can disable the "Tilt to Switch" toggle and set one of the buttons in your layout to "Toggle Tilt to Switch". Then, once on, when you want to do your switch, just press the button and it will enable the sensor, allowing you to switch whenever you'd like (and press the same button again to disable).

Once you set up Tilt to Switch, boot your remote into one of your bluetooth modes that has a layout set, and keep the remote in the position you set in the Primary Direction. Then, to switch, turn the remote 180º so the end opposite is pointed straight up and hold it there for a moment. When the layout switches, you will feel one long vibration to confirm the switch has occurred. The remote will not switch, or take any other "tilt" action until it returns to the Primary Direction, then you can continue to tilt it as needed to get to the layout you are looking to use.

WiFi Config - Settings

wifi config - settings

Here is a brief explanation of the settings in the WiFi config and what they all do. We also discuss this and show examples of each setting in the video.

Export/Import Settings - This allows you to save all of your settings, saved layouts, and book test setup information into a convenient file that, should you break your remote and need a replacement, or reset your remote, you can quickly load all of your settings without needing to set them all up again. For books loaded into the Book Test section of the settings, you will need to reload these books into your remote for them to work.

Lights - When on, this will turn off the LED light in all modes except the wifi config mode.

Keep Device Awake - When on, this will send a command every 5 seconds to the connected device to trick it into staying awake and not automatically locking.

Fake Name - When on, this will change the display name of the remote. This is ideal when you want to connect the remote to a spectators device and disconnect without removing it from their Bluetooth device list. We recommend setting this to "Keyboard", "CarPlay", or another innocent word that will not be easily discovered. If the remote is power cycled, it will reconnect to the last paired device. However, you can prevent the remote from reconnecting to the previous spectators phone (if you are performing for multiple people in a night) by pressing and holding "0" when you turn the remote on, then turning it off once it vibrates. This is discussed in more detail below:

Enter Fake Name -This is the fake name that will show when Fake Name is enabled.

Add Numeric Tag to Name - This will allow you to add a 1, 2, 3, or 4 digit random number at the end of the name of your remote. This is specifically for keeping track if you need to pair the remote to the same device, or if you have reset it to prepare for your next performance.

Change Numeric Tag at Boot - If enabled, and if the "Fake Name" setting is on, and you have "Numeric Tag" enabled in settings, this will change the tag to a new random number each time the remote is powered on. Turn this off if you want to change the numeric tag only when holding down the "0" button at boot.

Pre Text/Post Text - When on, this will add text before (for pre) or after (for post) the word typed in via the "Set Key" button or, in Book Test mode, retrieved from the active book.

Keyboard Layout/Keyboard - This is specifically to fix a iOS/MacOS issue. In iOS/MacOS, they keyboard layout must match the language of the keyboard set in Settings. If this differs, some of the characters will not come in correctly. On Windows/Android, this is not an issue so leave set to Windows/Android.

Bluetooth Power Level - This is the power sent to the Bluetooth antenna to connect to your phone. This is only for phone mode, use a lower level for more battery life and shorter distance, higher for less battery life but longer distance. This is only for Bluetooth and Book Test Mode; in watch mode, this is set to the maximum by default.

Reset Control System - If you find you are having issues with the remote, or with loading new firmware or settings, click the "Reset" button to factory reset your device. Make sure you save your layout before doing so, this will clear all settings.

Book Test Mode

Book test mode and setup

Versa Remote now works with the Book Test Library! If you have not heard of the Book Test Library, it is a collection of pre-indexed books that you can load into your Versa Remote and perform Book Test Revelations with! Also, you can load several books and choose the book you want to use in performance! And, you can use purchased books with many other magic apps as well! This section is going to be divided into two parts, the setup and performance:

Setup:

The Versa remote comes with David Penn's Pi Revelations. If you don't already have it, it is available from your favorite magic dealer. To use Pi Revelations, simply hold down the #9 button on the remote on boot, and when you type in a 4 digit number, the location of that number is then typed into your (or your spectators) phone.

The Versa remote also comes with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. To download this book, click the link here and then follow the instructions below under "Install a New Book".

However, to fully experience the power of the Book Test mode and perform with other books, you needs to purchase them from the Book Test Library. If you have a subscription to the library, you will still need to purchase the books you want to use with the remote itself. Right Now, you can find them here! When you purchase them, we will ask you for your Versa serial number, which you can find at the bottom of the wifi config screen (It commonly looks like "Versa15#1234567"). Please include the ENTIRE NAME in your order notes when ordering, to ensure your files are delivered correctly. We will email you the zip files you need, so once you get them please keep them safe somewhere!

install a new book:

In the wifi config menu, click on Book Tests, then click "Upload". From there, unzip the files we send you (this is a "nameofbook.bin" file) and select that .bin file to upload. Upload and wait, this process will usually take a few minutes. When it is complete, you will see the name of your book in the drop down menu next to "Books".

For each book, you need to set up a couple of different options:

  1. Location Input Method: This is the method of determining which word will be input into the connected device. Most of them are pretty straightforward, but as an example, if you choose "Longest Word on Line", the remote will expect a 5 digit input: 3 digits for the page number and 2 digits for the line number. For some options (labeled as "on page") these would only require the 3 digit page number. For entry modes requiring page number, the page number is always a 3 digit value (page 5 would be entered as 005). For line and word number, or number of letters, those values are always 2 digit values (line 3 is entered as 03, word 6 is entered as 06, etc). This mode is per book and cannot be changed in performance.

If you plan to perform this with a line number option, count the number of lines on a typical page (that has a full page worth of lines on it) and write it, in pencil, on the inside of the back cover of the book. If you plan to do exact word, do this with a typical number of words on a line (find a line that is a full line length and write that number). This is so you can quickly peek it during performance.

  2. Book Boot Key: These are the books you can assign to the 4-6 keys so, when pressed and held while powering the remote on, it will load the chosen book. You can then switch books while the remote is on by long-pressing any of the 4-5-6 keys, and you will feel a vibration to indicate you are on another book.

  3. Directional Pad Layout - While in Book Test mode, you can also select a set of buttons for the directional pad, either to use in conjunction with Book Test mode or independent of it (for another effect). You can set a new layout specifically for your book test, or choose a layout you already have saved, and Versa will only use the D-Pad buttons (BA-BE) actions, reserving the B1-9 and B0 for the book test itself. Making any changes to your saved layouts here will change the same layouts used in standard Bluetooth mode.

Before continuing with the Performance instructions below, also make sure to set the phrase "You will think of the word " (with a space at the end) to one of the A-E buttons with the "Set Key" option, or set it as the Pre-Text (in the Settings tab). If you are performing Pi Revelation, put "The location of your number is at " instead, since it will type the location.

Once done, be sure to save your settings!

Performance:

  1. Start by booting the remote to the book you are using to perform by pressing and holding the key you previously set for whichever specific book you want to use. Open the target phone (yours or a spectators if you have "Fake Name" on) to a new note, email, or something similar that takes a text input.

  2. If it is your phone, you can skip this step. If it is a BORROWED phone, make sure to pair the remote to their device now. You can use the guise of typing your prediction as an excuse to take the time/tap the screen as needed to "make your prediction". Force quit or close the Bluetooth menu open and switch back to whichever app was opened in step 1.

  3. If you have pre or post text set up, skip this step. If not, if you have the "prediction sentence" saved as one of your D-Pad buttons (you should from the setup!), press it to type it in. This also confirms the device is paired and working with your remote.

  4. Next, either hand a copy of the book you would like to use to your spectator (the one you have loaded into the remote), or ask your spectator to pick a book. If they pick the loaded book, great, you don't need to do anything else! If they don't, press and hold the corresponding button to switch to that book (B4, B5, or B6).

  5. Ask your spectator to name any page from 1 to whatever the last page of the book is. When they name the page, as they flip to it, put the number into the remote's number pad (make sure to include any leading zeros, so page 14 would be entered as 014 and page 9 would be entered as 009).

  6. If your Location Input mode is a "page only" option, you can skip down to Ask them to look at the word specified in the setup above (from wifi config). What to do next depends on the Location Input Method set up in Wifi Config. If you have the method set to one with the word "page" in it ("first word on page" , "last word on page", etc), then the word will be typed into your target device immediately and you don't have to do anything more.

If you have the method set to one with the word "line" in it ("first word on line" , "last word on line", etc), then peek your line number and say "The average page has X number of lines on it, so give me a number from 1 to X". Again, if they say a single digit number, put a 0 before it (so line 9 would be entered as 09). If you enter a number higher than the number of lines on the page, ask your spectator to look at the last line of the page.

  7. Finally, if you have the method set to "exact word", you need to enter the line number AND the word number (number of words in), both as a two digit value. So, the entire input for exact word is 3 digits for page number, two digits for line number, and two digits for word position.

This is also the case for number of letter options. Just remember that this value must be a 2 digit number, so if the number of letters is 1-9, lead with a 0 (4 is "04").

  8. The remote will buzz, letting you know the word has been typed into your phone. On iOS, you should also flip the remote off (or, if you have a button set, put the remote to sleep), showing the software keyboard, and show your revelation.

For Pi Revelations, make sure to input just the 4 digit number you want to reveal, and its location will be typed into the phone straightaway.

Some Important Things to Mention:

When you are asking the spectator to count the number of words in on a line, if the first word is a partial/hyphenated word, COUNT THIS WORD AS PART OF THE COUNT! Most people will count the half word and, if they don't, you will only be off by one (put a "off by one" card in your pocket just in case). If the first word of a sentence is a partial word, the FULL word will be input as the prediction word (so if they choose word or the first word is hyphenated, they can still select it, just looking at the previous line to see what the word is).

If you want to switch to another book after the remote is powered on, just long press the boot button for that book, and Versa will switch to it (and give you a long vibration to confirm).

Also, if you make a mistake while entering the digits and you want to start over, press and hold the "0" button. Once you feel the vibration, you can start entering the location numbers again.

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: Make sure your phone is set to not sleep or auto lock AND the cursor is flashing in the spot you want it to type when performing this. If your phone sleeps or auto locks, or if you don't have a flashing cursor, it will not be able to type the word into the field in your chosen app. You can also set the "Keep Device Awake" setting to on, that will also keep your phone awake while performing.

You can get Pi Revelations at any reputable magic shop. The copy of Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone you need is this one, available on Amazon.com or most any bookstore. The rest of the details on the compatible books are available on the Book Test Library page.

Wifi Confg - Watch

WIFI CONFIG - WATCH

This is pretty straightforward, but the Watch tab has two main functionalities:

  1. Watch Input - 24hr: If this is on, the watch will expect a 4 digit entry for the time, but it will allow you to put in 24 hour times/times less than 100 and greater than 1259 and will automatically set the clock to the appropriate time (based on a 24 hour clock).

  2. Force Times: This is simply where you can set the force times that Versa will send to a connected watch when triggered (with a long press of that same letter button while in watch mode and connected to the watch).

swiping and switch control on ios

Switch Control iOS

Although we do not formally offer support with any other apps, both iOS and Android have methods to convert keyboard presses into swipes. So, any magic app that takes a swipe input to secretly control, you can use with our Versa Remote.

The way you can do this is with a feature in iOS know as "Switch Control". Switch Control is normally used by the handicapped to control their phone using an external device. However here, we will set it up to work with our remote.

  1. Once your remote is connected, go to Settings > Accessibility > Switch Control and tap on the button labeled "Switches"

  2. Tap on "Add New Switch..." > External > and then press one of the buttons on the remote. A window will pop up asking you to name the switch, so name it appropriately (if it is the up button, name it "Up"). Press Save. Then, under the list of "Actions", tap on the action marked "Tap".

  3. Repeat step 2 for each button on the remote. When you are done, there should be 6 switches total.

  4. Back out of the Switches menu by tapping "Switch Control" in the top left corner (you should now be in the main "Switch Control" menu) and tap "Recipies".

  5. Under "Recipies" at the bottom, tap "Create New Recipe"

  6. Tap on the Name box and turn your remote OFF (so the keyboard will come up), then name your recipe. This can be something generic like "Swipe Controls" or for a specific app like "TimeLine". Turn your remote back on and the keyboard will hide itself.

  7. Tap "Assign a Switch", and you will see all of the switches you just created. Tap the name of one of your switches you created in step 2 (for this example press the "Up" switch), then tap "Custom Gesture".

  8. The "New Gesture" window is where you will draw on the screen the gesture that will be duplicated when this switch button is pushed. So, for the Up switch, draw a quick up swipe motion on the screen. Whatever speed you draw it will be the speed it is performed on screen when the button is pressed. If you mess it up, you can press "Record" in the bottom right corner to redo the swipe. You can press "Play" to preview the stroke, and "Save" to save it. You can also tap parts of the screen as well as swipe if your app takes tap inputs.

  9. Repeat steps 7 and 8 until each key has its own custom gesture. For buttons that should just send a single tap, you can choose "Tap Middle of Screen" from the menu if you don't want to make a custom gesture.

  10. Once saved, tap on "Recipes" in the upper left corner (in blue), and tap "Launch Recipe", then tap the name of the recipe you just created.

  11. Once done, go back top the main menu for Switch Control, and ensure the scanning style is set to "Manual" and Auto-Hide is set to 1s. Tap "Accessibility" in the top left corner of the screen when done.

  12. Scroll to the bottom of Accessibility and tap on "Accessibility Shortcut". Tap "Switch Control" so it has a blue checkmark next to it.

Switch Control is now set up! Now, to enable it before you use whatever app you want to use with your remote, press the home button 3 times quickly (on full screen phones like iPhone X, the button on the right side of the phone is the home button) to bring up the Accessibility Menu, then tap "Switch Control". When you do this, your device will say your recipe is active, and if you press the buttons on your remote, you will see a gizmo carrying out those gestures. This will apply to any app that is running on your phone. Once you are done performing, triple click the home button again and tap "Switch Control" to disable.

NOTES:

  • When you enable switch control, the recipe will automatically be enabled. However, IF THE PHONE GOES TO SLEEP THE RECIPE WILL BE DISABLED! You can re-enable it by toggling switch control off and on from the Accessibility Shortcut triple click menu.

  • If you have Switch Control enabled and make changes to the recipes, switch control will not update the changes until it is turned off and back on.

  • Any gesture set up in the custom gestures will be replicated with one push of a button. So, if your app needs a long press gesture, set up the long press in custom gestures, assign it to a switch/button, and it will run when you press that button once.

Obviously, before you perform, make sure to set up Switch Control and test with your app to ensure it functions correctly with our remote, and if you have any questions of how to make the Versa remote work with your app, contact the app developer or drop us a line at support@thoughtcastmagic.com so we can chat and possibly add support for our remote to their app.

Also, you can still use our remote on your Android device to control it for other apps. This is outside our area of expertise, but we believe you can use a keyboard remapping app like Octopus for Android to set up keyboard to swipe conversion. There's a video below on the method we found to make it work with Octopus, but if you know a better way please let us know.

Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting

If you run into any issues with the remote, here are some troubleshooting steps you can take.

- No Remote in BT List

If the remote will not show up in the bluetooth device list:

  1. Press and hold #1 when powering the remote on (to set into bt mode).

  2. Check the remote is not paired to another device.

  3. Plug the remote into power (if your battery is too low it might not connect).

  4. (if you can connect to wifi config), connect to wifi config, go to "Settings", then click the "Reset" button.

  5. Press and hold the #9 button on the 10 button model (2nd row from the power button, right side) or the C button on the 15 button model (the middlemost button of the d-pad at the bottom of the remote) while powering the remote on, wait 10 seconds, then power the remote off and back on (this is a full reset and will erase your custom buttons).

  6. Turn your bluetooth radio off and on on your phone.

  7. Reboot your phone.

- No remote in WIFI list

If the remote will not show up in your wifi when you put it into wifi config mode (hold #0 and power on):

  1. Check the blue led on the remote is pulsing (if not power the remote off, hold the #0 button, and power it on again).

  2. Check another device hasn't connected to the remote's wifi automatically.

  3. Refresh the wifi network list on your device (either by closing and reopening the window that has the list, or by powering off your wifi radio, waiting 10 seconds, and powering it back on.

  4. Reboot your phone or computer, or try another device.

- Watch Connection Issues

If the remote will not connect to your smart watch:

  1. Make sure it is compatible (email us or check the list on the Versa faq page)

  2. Make sure your watch is not paired to another device/phone.

  3. Make sure your watch has a fresh battery (if you haven't changed the battery in over a year, put a fresh battery in your watch or take it to a watch repair person for replacement).

  4. Reset the watch saved in the remote by powering on the remote while holding down button #8.

  5. Boot the remote to watch pairing mode (hold down button #6)

  6. Put the watch into pairing mode.

  7. Do a full reset of the remote by powering the remote on while holding down button #9. Then, start the remote in watch mode again (press and hold #6 while powering remote on).

-Buttons won't depress easly

Buttons won't depress easily/click when press:

The Versa remote buttons (the part you press) are separated by the button actuator (the part inside the remote that registers a button press) by a thin layer or rubberized glue. As a result, when you first receive your remote, or if your remote sits for a long period, the buttons may become difficult to depress. The buttons will, with repeated use, "loosen up" and become easier to press, so the best thing to do if you haven't used the remote in a while is to place a soft cloth on top of the remote buttons and press them with the broad side of your thumb or palm to loosen the buttons.

Also, keep in mind that, if you press a button with the remote off or disconnected, it is still potentially operational. Make sure the remote is connected to your device, then when you depress each key, you should feel a sleight vibration. This is the real indicator if the button was pressed or not and you should use this vibration to determine if the button was actually pressed or not.

- Repairing Paint on Buttons

If the paint chips or comes off of the buttons of the remote:

The buttons on the remote, albeit designed for high use, can potentially chip or wear down with repeated use. Specifically, the very top/tip of each remote button. However, the buttons are easily re-paintable and repairable, and can be done without damaging the electronics.

The simplest way is to paint the button. You can find flesh colored or flesh tone acrylic from any art supply store, or Amazon.com (Vallejo Sunny Skintone is a good choice of color). Find a tone that matches the remote somewhat but, since this part will be covered by your finger, it doesn't have to match exactly.

Then, apply a small amount to a q-tip, and dab that amount onto the remote. If you apply too much, wipe away the excess with a clean q-tip.

Let this paint dry overnight and, if needed, apply a second coat and let dry completely. Do not let the paint drip down into the remote housing, as this could make the buttons difficult to press.

The exact paint we use on the buttons is this color, Montana Gold 1430 - Makeup. If you end up buying this paint, do not spray it directly onto the buttons...spray it into a small container (like a soda can cut in half or an old plastic food container), then use a Q-Tip to apply the paint to the top of the button.

Also, if you are not comfortable doing the repainting yourself, we are more than happy to repair button paint for you. This is free of charge for remotes in-warranty (you pay for just the shipping), and a nominal fee for out of warranty remotes. Just email us and we'll help sort out the details with you.

- Use Versa with other TC Apps

If you want to use the Versa Remote with ThoughtCast Apps:

The Versa Remote works with almost all of our various apps and products. If you purchased your Versa Remote directly from ThoughtCast Magic, you should already have Versa access unlocked when you log into the other ThoughtCast Magic app.

If you don't see it, more than likely you need to link your Versa Remote to your ThoughtCast Magic Portal Account. To do this, enter the serial number of your remote (just the number part after the "Versa15#" when it is connected via bluetooth) into the "Activate a Code" box.

If that does not work, email us your remote serial number and we'll activate this on your account manually.
